List of domestic dogs

The Spinone is an Italian breed of dog recognized by the FCI ( FCI Group 7, Section 1.3, Standard No. 165 ).

Origin and history

The Return of Cardinal Gonzaga (1450) by Andrea Mantegna

It is believed that the breed originated in Piedmont, Italy . It is believed that it is one of the oldest pointing dogs . This type of dog can be found on the fresco by Andrea Mantegna The Return of Cardinals Gonzaga (1450) and on a painting by Annibale Carracci (1560-1609). Jacques Espée de Selincourt wrote in 1683 in his book Le Parfait Chasseur (The Perfect Hunter) that the best Griffons come from Italy and Piedmont, making reference to the Spinone. Precisely because it is an old breed, the origins are unclear and there are various theories that are far apart. Tale, a cynologist from the 16th century, suspects the origin of the Spinone in the connection between Russian Griffons and Bracco Italiano . Another theory suggests the origin of a now extinct Spanish pointing dog.

The Spinone almost died out during World War II. The fact that many Italian hunters began to hunt with other pointing dogs that came from abroad, such as setters , pointers or German Wirehaired Pointer , also played a role . In return, the Spinone was also exported to other countries, so that the breeding population has now recovered.
