Spirit Disease is a Finnish deathgrind and death metal band from Espoo that was founded in 2002, disbanded in 2015 and has been active again since 2016.

history

The band was founded in September 2002 by bassist and singer Mika Sallanen. The line-up was complemented by the guitarist Toni Koskinen, the singer Pekka Laukkanen and the drummer Kevin Tenetz. A short time later, Tenetz was replaced by Saku Mattila, before Laukkanen left the cast for family reasons, after which Sallanen acted as the sole singer. All members had known each other for over ten years. Over the next few months the trio rehearsed and wrote new songs before a first demo was recorded in June 2003 . Through the demo, Jarno Taskula became aware of the band, who joined her as a singer in August. Until March 2004, the band held further rehearsals, this time for the EP Redemption Denied , which was recorded in the D-Studio that same month . Originally only planned as a further demo, it was released as an official EP in October 2004 on Vortex Motions Records . It contains, among other things, a cover version of Deaths Evil Dead . Then the first isolated concerts took place. In May Jani Riikonen joined as a further guitarist. After a few appearances, Taskula got out in May of the following year, which was soon replaced by Tuomas "Tuberculosis" Piippo. Before the band could hold another gig, Mattilla left the group in August for health reasons after producing some new demo songs. On the basis of this, the new drummer Mikko Toivonen, who joined in September, learned to familiarize himself. In March 2006, the band began recording their debut album in D-Studio. After a record deal had been signed with Twisted Face Records in June , the debut album Annihilation was released in August . The band was able to increase its popularity through the release. In the following time she gave concerts in clubs and the single What's God Got to Do with It? was published online in December 2006. The recordings for the second album were supposed to start in 2008, but this was postponed because the post of drummer often changed - sometimes the respective member left the band only to return a little later. During this time the band also held gigs, with Rainer Tuomikanto helping out as a drummer. One of the drummers during this period was Timo "Mohkis" Huuskonen, who soon left to return to his previous band, Dead Shape Figure . In January 2009 Sami Hänninen took the permanent position of drummer, after which the demo Spawn of Satan was recorded in the summer , which contains three songs, before the second album Retaliation was recorded in November 2010 in the D-Studio in Klaukkala , where all official recordings took place has been. For the rest of the year the members decided to take a break, but in January 2011 Hänninen announced his departure. In April, the group signed a recording deal with Inverse Records , which released the album the following month. In September 2011 Veikko Ringvall got on as a drummer, after which it was possible to perform live again. In July 2015 the band broke up.

She was revived on June 10, 2016, following an offer to play at the 2017 FDMM Festival . The line-up now consisted of Piippo, Sallanen and Koskinen from the returned drummer Toivonen and the guitarist Laakso.

style

Luxi Lahtinen from metal-rules.com assigned the band to the Deathgrind in their Annihilation review, although they are quite varied. He described the music as a mixture of Rotten Sound (due to the grindcore part ), Impaled Nazarene (due to the vocals and the aggressiveness of the songs) and Bolt Thrower (due to the groovy passages). Eric Ossowski from twilight-magazin.de said in his review of Retaliation that the album offers “no-frills old school death metal”. Characteristic are growls , a dense “ carpet of reefs ” created by the electric guitars , changes in tempo, groovy passages and memorable licks . Sabine van Gameren from tempelores.com also assigned the album to Death Metal. The play of the drums is in the foreground, they are carried out, and melodic passages are also incorporated. The singing is varied, mostly deep and masculine, but occasionally also high. In addition to classic, the band also tries to process modern influences.
