The Rheintal Werdenberg Sarganserland hospital region (SR RWS) is an association of hospitals in Altstätten, Grabs and Walenstadt founded in 2003 . It provides basic medical care for around 170,000 residents in the Rhine Valley , Werdenberg , Sarganserland and Principality of Liechtenstein catchment areas . The SR RWS is one of four hospital associations in the canton of St. Gallen in Eastern Switzerland .

History of the locations

Altstätten Hospital

In 1864 Florian Marolani-Schachtler (1811–1864) left a legacy for the construction of a hospital, which opened in 1868 with 24 beds. In 1905 the Protestant poor administration handed over the hospital to the political community of Altstätten . In the following decades the hospital was continuously enlarged and renewed. The community hospital was taken over by the canton of St. Gallen in 1991 and continued as a cantonal hospital before being incorporated into the hospital region in 2003. Today the Altstätten Hospital has around 80 beds and 232 employees (full-time positions). After the city of Altstätten has granted the building permit for the project “renovation and expansion of the Altstätten hospital”, the administrative board of the hospital associations of the canton of St. Gallen takes a pause for reflection on this construction project. The Board of Directors has a strategic interest in making those investments in Altstätten that correspond to the future strategy. The continuation of the Altstätten hospital as an acute hospital has been uncertain since summer 2018.

Grabs Hospital

The Grabs Hospital was opened on May 7, 1907 as the Werdenberg District Hospital . The foundation was based on a fund that emerged in 1897 from a legacy of former Cantonal Councilor Paravizin Hilty. The hospital was taken over by the canton of St. Gallen on January 1, 1911 and operated as a cantonal hospital until it was incorporated into the SR RWS in 2003. It has 137 beds and around 497 employees (full-time positions).

The Grabs Hospital is currently being rebuilt. In February 2016, the temporary structure for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was put into operation. This was followed by the groundbreaking for the first construction phase, which will be ready for occupancy in spring 2020. [obsolete] The interior work is currently underway. The last construction phase will be completed in 2024.Template: future / in 4 years

Walenstadt Hospital

On January 1, 1891, the Walenstadt hospital started operations with 35 beds. It was founded thanks to a generous donation from Fridolin Huber. The Walenstadt Hospital was run as a cantonal hospital from the start. In 1991 the dialysis station with four places was opened in Spital Walenstadt - today it has twelve modern dialysis places. In 2003 the hospital was incorporated into the SR RWS and today has around 100 beds and 307 employees (full-time positions). 2006, the first palliative room was put into operation and 2008 Palliativstation expanded. In 2016, Walenstadt Hospital celebrated its 125th anniversary. The continuation of the Walenstadt hospital as an acute hospital has been uncertain since summer 2018.

The SR RWS today

The Rheintal Werdenberg Sarganserland hospital region is combined into one company as an independent public institution. Administration services have been centralized since the hospital region was founded. The hospital network is managed centrally by a joint management of all three hospitals, which is supported on site by the respective site management. The management and administration are based in Rebstein . At the head of the organization is the administrative board of hospital associations of the canton of St. Gallen, to which, in addition to the SR RWS, the cantonal hospital of St. Gallen , the Linth hospital and the Fürstenland-Toggenburg hospital region report.

In addition to the specialist disciplines of internal medicine, surgery and orthopedics, the range of services offered by SR RWS also includes gynecology and obstetrics, acute geriatrics, anesthesia and radiological diagnostics. The hospital region also operates an intensive care unit in Grabs and emergency wards at the locations. Through cooperation with other medical institutions, for example with the St. Gallen Cantonal Hospital, treatments can be carried out that go beyond basic care. These include a. a stroke unit for the treatment of strokes, a breast center for the detection and treatment of breast cancer, as well as vascular medicine, visceral surgery (abdominal and intestinal surgery) and oncology. The SR RWS has around 300 beds and employs around 1,400 people (including around 170 in training) who care for around 16,000 inpatients and around 94,000 outpatients per year (as of 2016).
