Spitteleck

The Spitteleck is a residential building on the Spittelmarkt in the Berlin district of Mitte at the eastern end of Leipziger Strasse , the western bank of the Spree Canal .

History and planning

The Spitteleck was built between 1980 and 1985 by BMK Ingenieurhochbau Berlin under the direction of the architect Eckart Schmidt . The building was constructed from prefabricated prefabricated elements in the style of brutalism . The complex contained 295 apartments, a day nursery, two shops and a restaurant. The concrete facade was decorated with various depictions of animals, flowers and children.

The cubature of the building is based on the historical course of the street and the eaves height of the neighboring buildings. The building is indicative of the change in urban planning in the GDR . The consideration of historically grown structures and the environment now played a much greater role than in the plans of the 1960s and 1970s of socialist urban planning such as the adjacent complex Leipziger Straße .

Because of these qualities, the Spitteleck was awarded the architecture prize of the capital Berlin in 1986 .

The building was renovated in 2014. The renovation took place without the involvement of the architect Eckhart Schmidt. He was happy with the result.

Others

The well-known neon sign from Coca Cola on the roof of the building was put up shortly after German reunification .

The building is faded in several times in the film The Bourne Conspiracy . In the film, the character of the main actor Jason Bourne, played by Matt Damon , is shot in front of the Spitteleck. The Spitteleck is supposed to represent a place in Moscow .
