features

Pointed-leaved asparagus is an evergreen, climbing subshrub that reaches heights of 1 to 2 meters. The stem is whitish, erect and has rough ribs. The dummy leaves are green to blue-green, hard, pointed and measure 2 to 10 × 0.3 to 0.5 millimeters. There are 4 to 10 (rarely up to 30) dummy leaves per node. The scale leaves have a 2 to 4 millimeter long spine at the base. The inflorescence is 3 to 4 millimeters long. The flower stalk is 4 to 7 millimeters long. The berries are 4.5 to 7 millimeters in diameter and black.

The flowering period extends from August to September.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 20.

Occurrence

Pointed-leaved asparagus occurs in the Mediterranean region in pine forests and maquis up to heights of 1525 meters.

use

The wild-growing pointed-leaved asparagus is collected in the form of young shoots around Trieste, in the warmer parts of Slovenia and Croatia, but also in south-east France and north-east Spain (Catalonia), braised briefly and eaten as a vegetable side dish. The shoots are much thinner than commercial asparagus, but their taste is much more intense.

Pointed-leaved asparagus is rarely used as an ornamental plant. The species has been in culture since 1640 at the latest.
