The split knapweed ( Centaurea salonitana ) is a species of knapweed ( Centaurea ) in the sunflower family (Asteraceae).

The split knapweed is an upright, perennial plant that reaches heights of 20 to 60 centimeters. The leaves are mostly all pinnate . The sections are more or less entire and lanceolate . The petioles are winged. The uppermost stem leaves are entire. The flowers together form flower-like heads , these are arranged in an umbrella cluster and have a stalk. The shell is up to 2 centimeters wide and more or less egg-shaped. The envelope scales are roofy, greenish-yellow and have a rigid tip up to 1 centimeter long. Their appendages are narrow, brown and ciliate with bristles. All flowers are tubular, five-lobed and yellow. The outer flowers are sterile and enlarged, the inner ones fertile and small. The fruit is a black achenes up to 4 millimeters long with a bristly fringe of hair that is longer than the achenes themselves.

Flowering time is from July to August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 20 or 40.

Occurrence

The split knapweed occurs in the central and eastern Mediterranean area, on the Balkan Peninsula, in Southeast Europe and in Turkey on dry grassland and fields. Its distribution area includes Croatia, Albania, Serbia, Macedonia, Greece, the Aegean Sea, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Moldova, European and Asian Turkey and the Caucasus region.
