The Spoetzl Brewery is an American brewery based in Shiner , Texas .
history
In 1909 the brewery was founded by German and Czech immigrants under the name Shiner Brewing Association . The first master brewer was Hermann Weiss. After Weiss moved to San Antonio in 1914 , the company was initially leased by the Germans Kosmos Spoetzl and Oswald Petzold and operated under the name Home Brewing Company until the following year . Spoetzl and Petzold finally bought the brewery in 1915 and renamed it Petzold & Spoetzl . During the Prohibition era , the brewery only produced non-alcoholic drinks and ice cream. When Prohibition ended, it was only one of five breweries in all of Texas. Spoetzl's company policy has always been to limit itself to delivering to the nearby region. Nevertheless, the company expanded rapidly, not least thanks to established beer brands such as the Shiner Bock .
In 1950 Kosmos Spoetzl died and his daughter Cecilie took over management of the company. She renamed the brewery to its current name in honor of her father. In 1966 she hired John Hybner as the new master brewer, who held this position until 2005. In 1989 the brewery was taken over by Carlos Alvarez ' The Gambrinus Company . Five years later, 100,000 barrels of beer were produced, which is just over 5.8 million liters. This amount could be tripled again within the next ten years.
Spoetzl Brewery was the tenth largest brewery in the United States by 2010 sales.
