The Sports Media Austria (SMA) is the association of Austrian sports journalists or -Photographers and employees in electronic and other up-dealing with sports media.

Until his death in March 1997, Josef Strabl headed the “Sports Journalists Section” in the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions (ÖGB). From this specialist group, the “Austrian Sports Journalists Club” (ÖSC) was founded under the new President Michael Kuhn in 1997 after the split from the union .

"Sports Media Austria" was founded under a new name at the 2001 General Assembly in Abtenau . The sports director of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) Hans Peter Trost has been the president of this interest group since 2014 .

Sports Media Austria Prize for Journalists (selection)

Since 2004, the journalist prize “Sports Media Austria Prize for Journalists” has been awarded annually by SMA in cooperation with Coca-Cola . Contributions to national and international sporting events are awarded.

Sportsman of the year (Austria)

All members of Sports Media Austria have the right to elect the athlete of the year in Austria annually by secret ballot (exception: extraordinary members).
In 2013, around 560 of the approximately 850 members took part in this election, which has been held together with Austrian Sports Aid since 1949.

Young Academy

Young sports journalists are supported as part of the “Young Academy”.
