The Spritzsalmler ( Copella arnoldi ) is a freshwater fish of the family of Sicklefishes (Lebiasinidae).

Occurrence

The fish live in the lower Amazon , in the coastal Guiana and in the Orinoco Delta . In Suriname as well as on Trinidad and Tobago , splash tetra have been identified as a neozoon .

features

Squirt tetra have an elongated, torpedo-shaped body. The males reach a size of 8 cm, the females of 5 cm. The head is pointed with a black ribbon. The body is yellow-brown, the belly whitish. The flanks of the males turn dark brown when excited. The fins are transparent with orange edges. There is a black and white spot at the base of the dorsal fin. The squirt tetra has no adipose fin . Males are larger and more colorful, their fins are long.

Reproduction

To lay their eggs, both partners jump out of the water side by side, and then hang together on a leaf for a few seconds. During this time 5 to 12 eggs are laid and fertilized. This process is repeated several times so that a clutch comprises 50 to 200 eggs. So that the clutch laid outside the water (up to 8 cm above the water surface) does not dry out, the male sprays it with water with the caudal fin every 20 to 30 minutes. After 2 to 3 days the young hatch and fall into the water.
