Squadune is a folk band from Austria. The name is a mixture of square, drone , tune & quartet. The music is a colorful mixture of European folk music , often with unusual rhythms , frequent rhythm changes and often with changes in harmony . The use of drone instruments and the combination of different stringed instruments is also typical for Squadune . The Irish - Celtic tradition and the music of Galicia are particularly influential (repeatedly presented at concerts as "the particularly mystical landscape of Galicia", see also the corresponding title: The very mystical landscape of Galicia / Road to Santiago of the album Invasion of the Macho -Chests ). In addition to complete original compositions, traditionals are also processed. In addition, borrowings from English-language poets are repeatedly taken and their texts set to music, for example Why so pale and wan based on a text by Sir John Suckling (1609–1642) ( still mistakenly identified as traditional on the album Invasion of the Macho-Chests , corrected on the live album Black Forest Tales ).
history
In 1992, Martin Moro helped out at some concerts by the Aniada a Noar group . This creates the idea of a joint new group. Members at this time are Michael Krusche, Andreas Safer, (both Aniada a Noar), and Martin Moro. After a short time Hubert Dohr from the folk duo Omnifarious joins the group.
In 1993 numerous appearances take place, including a. at the folk festivals Bärnbach and Hallein . Before the realization of a sound carrier, Andreas Safer decides to leave, in order to be able to concentrate more on his core group Aniada a Noar. His resignation initiates a long break in the project.
Hubert Dohr and Martin Moro meet again in 1996 at a festival in Upper Austria and the project is taken up again. This time Kurt Bauer from the Deishovida group can be won as violinist . In 1998 the first CD Invasion of the Macho-Chests was recorded with this line-up. Matthias Loibner from Deishovida (electro-acoustic hurdy-gurdy) and Klaus Paier (accordion) are also featured as guest musicians on the album. Years of intensive concert activity followed with tours throughout the German-speaking area.
The large number of appearances prompted Kurt Bauer to leave the band in 2000 to concentrate on his main project Deishovida . In his place comes Stephan Steiner almost seamlessly, with whom other tours are also played. In 2002 the live album Black Forest Tales was recorded with this line-up.
Up to and including 2006, Squadune performed around 30–40 concerts a year in Austria, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. Studio projects and other bands have had priority since the beginning of 2007, so that the group hardly appears in public.
