The Squam Lake is a lake in the middle of the US state of New Hampshire northwest of the much larger Lake Winnipesaukee .

It is located south of the White Mountains at the junction of Grafton County , Carroll County and Belknap County . The largest place on its shore is Holderness .

Its area is 27.5 km² and its maximum extension is 11.3 km in length and 7.4 km in width. Squam Lake is the second largest lake that is entirely within New Hampshire.

Squam Lake drains through a short natural runoff into Little Squam Lake and then through a dam at the head of the Squam River near Ashland into the Pemigewasset River .

Its original name was Keeseenunknipee, which meant 'the lake of the geese in the highlands' and was shortened to Casumpa or Kusumpy by the white settlers around 1779. In the early years of the 19th century, the lake was given another name in the Abenaki language , Asquam, which meant 'water'. After all, the lake got its current name at the beginning of the 20th century.

The movie Am golden See (1981) was shot here and two boat excursions starting in Holderness take visitors to the locations.
