The Church of St-Antoine.

The Roman Catholic Church of St-Antoine in Arzillières-Neuville , a French municipality in the Marne department , bears the patronage of Anthony of Padua and has been a listed monument since 1911 .

history

The parish of Arzillières was formerly part of the Perthes deanery . Around 1084, the then church of Arzillières, which was possibly southeast of the village, was built by Bishop Roger III. from Hainaut to the Abbey of Montier-en-Der . In 1234 the parish church of Arzillières Castle was moved by the abbot of Montier-en-Der to the current church of St-Antoine. From 1284 until the French Revolution , tithe was shared between the parish of Arzillières and the Abbey of Montier-en-Dier. In return, the abbey had to Montier-en-Der the pastor of Arzillières and the canons of each year collegiate church of Vitry-le-François , the Abbey Moncetz and the Provost of Larzicourt several Sester bread wheat pay.

The current Romanesque church from the 12th century was rebuilt in the 16th century.

The building suffered great damage in the First World War .

On October 25, 1911, the Church of St-Antoine was placed under monument protection as a classified Monument historique .

Architecture and equipment

On the north-western side of the square main tower with a porch is a round tower with stairs.

The church has several statues from the 16th to 18th centuries, which are also listed:

  • A painted wooden statue of Anthony of Padua;
  • A painted wooden statue of the Madonna with baby Jesus ;
  • A stone statue of the Madonna with baby Jesus;
  • Stone statues of two adoring angels.
