It is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist . The church is located in the French Ardennes department , in the municipality of Hannappes, in the eastern part of the village, overlooking the valley of Ton and Aube .

history

The parish is mentioned as early as 1113. In 1240 it was attached to the Notre-Dame Abbey in Laon . The church was restored in 1877.

description

The west portal is formed by three arches. Stylistically, they can be assigned to the late Romanesque or early Gothic ; likewise the choir, the transept and the eastern chapels. The nave and aisles date from the 17th or 18th century.

The baptismal font is from the 11th century in Romanesque style. Heads are shown at its four corners, the four sides are decorated with depictions of animals.

The building is sometimes counted among the fortified churches of Thiérache ( French Églises fortifiées de Thiérache ). Around one hundred churches are counted among these. Although the church is not clearly classified as a fortified church, it has defensive elements, loopholes in the tower and its own well and is likely to have performed its function as a place of refuge.
