St-Jean-l'Evangeliste (Bar-le-Régulier)
Saint-Jean-l'Evangeliste in Bar-le-Régulier in the Côte-d'Or department in Burgundy is the church building of a former Augustinian priory . Stylistically, it is assigned to the Burgundian Romanesque .
history
The priory church of the regulated Augustinians (hence the name le-Régulier ) was built around 1100 probably on behalf of Wilhelm II , Count von Nevers , in honor of the evangelist John . The west facade was renewed around 1200 and the crossing tower was added. In the centuries that followed, the monastery church was continuously expanded, so in 1489 there were fourteen consecrated altars in the church . In 1724 the parish fell to the Chapter of Notre-Dame de Semur, just a year later the clergy left the church and it soon began to deteriorate. In 1907 the French Regurieng placed the medieval building under monument protection .
Architecture and equipment
The building is a three-aisled basilica with a transept, rectangular choir and octagonal crossing tower . The nave is arched by a typical Burgundian pointed barrel with belt arches. The crossing with the low transept, the dividing arches of which are hardly larger than the aisle arcades, is characterized by a groin vault. There is a round barrel vault in the choir. There is no upper cladding, so that the only direct light in the room is through the west window and the rose window in the choir. This reduced, Cluniac architecture is directly modeled on the Cistercian Abbey of Fontenay .
An outstanding piece of equipment is the 34-piece choir stalls from the 14th century with depictions of scenes from the Apocalypse, the life of Mary, the Passion of Christ and the martyrdom of the Evangelist John. The chairs are considered to be the most beautiful of their kind in Burgundy. Another important piece of equipment is the alabaster statue of John the Evangelist , donated in 1489 . She is associated with the Burgundian-Flemish sculptor Jean or Juan de la Huerta.
