St. Blasius Church in Nellingen

The St. Blasius Church in Nellingen , a district of Ostfildern in the Esslingen district in Baden-Württemberg , is a Protestant church. Its tower, which was built around 1220, is the oldest structure in Nellingen and the oldest church tower of this type in Württemberg.

history

The church was built in the style of the late Romanesque in 1220 by the St. Blasien monastery built, the property and a local provost had and which also the patron saint Blaise comes. The tower, which has been preserved from the original building, has a quadrangular floor plan on its two lower floors, which tapers to an octagon at the top and is considered the oldest church tower of this type in Württemberg. The nave of the reformed church since 1537 had already been renewed after a fire in 1446 and was renewed again in 1777 in the simple style of a preacher's church after it was badly damaged in a storm in 1749 . There are no records of the shape of earlier church buildings.

The church was originally oriented traditionally to the east, but was then redesigned inside during a comprehensive renovation in 1926 by Prof. Martin Elsaesser , so that the altar and the baptismal font on the south wall came to stand in front of a walled up portal. In the course of the church renovation in 1926, a parish hall was added to the church.

The last comprehensive renovation of the church and parish hall took place in 1994/95. Among other things, the old sacristy was demolished and an anteroom to the stairwell to the gallery was created in its place . An old tomb from 1577 was erected in the anteroom. In addition, the church received a new floor and a completely new color scheme, which harmonizes with the new glass window by Andreas Felger above the altar niche. Several ancillary rooms were built in the parish hall, including a new sacristy and toilets.

The neighboring old parsonage from 1565 is one of the oldest buildings in Nellingen, was a parsonage until 1838 and has been owned by the city since 1975, which it completely renovated in 1980.

Furnishing

inner space

The church has around 500 seats, some of which are also located on the three-sided gallery and face south to the altar niche. The altar and baptismal font were designed by Martin Elsaesser in 1926. The comparatively ornate pulpit probably dates from the time before the new building in 1777. A first organ was purchased in 1765, but when the church was rebuilt in 1817 it was exchanged for the current instrument, the organ front of which bears the year of the rebuilding. The ringing of the church consists of five bells : Sunday bell (es 1 ), prayer bell (f 1 ), cross bell (g 1 ), death bell (b 1 ) and baptismal bell (c 2 ).
