St. Boniface Church

The church of St. Bonifatius in Bergen on Rügen is the seat of the only Roman Catholic community on the island of Rügen , which also includes the Stella Maris chapel in Binz , the Sacred Heart Church in Garz / Rügen and Maria Meeresstern in Sellin . It is the northernmost parish of the Archdiocese of Berlin and has around 1700 members. The parish merged on January 1, 2020 with the parishes of Hl. Trinity (Stralsund) and Maria Rosenkranzkönigin (Demmin) to form the parish of St. Bernhard Stralsund / Rügen / Demmin in the Deanery of Western Pomerania of the Diocese of Berlin .

history

At the beginning of the 19th century, the Stralsund priest Wendelin Zink made his first pastoral trips to the island of Rügen and held services in private homes of local Catholics. In 1863 a mission house with a chapel was built on the outskirts of the city of Bergen . It was consecrated on September 8th . After the establishment of a mission parish was approved by the Prussian state in 1864, Gustav Machai became the first Catholic pastor on Rügen and he worked until 1869. In addition to a rectory, there was also a Catholic school from 1867 to 1878. In 1871 there were around 700 Catholics on Rügen.

On July 1, 1910, when the congregation was already too big for the chapel, it was raised to an independent parish. The then pastor Maximilian Kaller - he worked on Rügen from 1905 to 1917 - collected funds for the new neo-Romanesque building by the Berlin architect August Kaufhold , which was completed in 1912. Later, Kaller built a daughter church in Garz. In 1917 he became a pastor at the St. Michaels Church in Berlin and later Bishop of Warmia .

The church is a listed building. Since 2000, it has housed a new, single-manual organ with a neo-Gothic prospect .
