history

Stralsund quickly became predominantly Protestant after the Reformation , which was spread by Christian Ketelhot . Catholics were in the minority, their churches, including the three large parish churches in Stralsund, the Nikolaikirche , the Marienkirche and the Jakobikirche , were now used by the Protestant Christians. The Reformation was introduced throughout Pomerania. After the Peace of Westphalia , Stralsund also came to the evangelical kingdom of Sweden and remained Swedish for almost 200 years.

Not until 1775 was a Catholic mission established again in the city. Until then, the few Catholics did not have their own house of worship. Masses were celebrated in private homes. Later, the masses were also celebrated in the St. John's Church in the former St. John 's Monastery of the Franciscans. On June 10, 1784, the foundation stone was laid for a church building approved by the Swedish king. The king wanted to give his mercenaries from Catholic countries the opportunity to go to church.

The place for the church was on Frankenstrasse . The Swedish Governor General Friedrich Wilhelm von Hessenstein and representatives of all authorities in Stralsund were present. On June 5, 1785, the church was inaugurated for 250 Catholics (mainly mercenaries, but also merchants and artists from Catholic areas) with a service with Pastor Martin Effertz. From 1803 Wendelin Zink also worked as a priest here.

The small church, which was laid out parallel to Frankenstrasse and faced , had a high altar and a pulpit . The first private church chair was set up for the Baroness von Ascherade in 1814, and more seats were gradually added.

Due to the increase in the Catholic population, the church interior was renovated and redesigned in 1872. The previously existing passage between the church and a neighboring house ( Frankenstrasse 37 ) was integrated into the church building. At the same time a Lady Chapel was created in the west side, in which the Madonna, donated in 1817, was placed. From February 13, 1905 to November 7 of the same year, the church building was further enlarged under Pastor Wahl: The church was expanded three times to the south, so that the altar was now in the south. The previous altar in the east of the church has been converted into a weekday altar. A planned tower failed due to the financial requirements for it. The consecration was carried out by the archpriest Hirchberger.

The Berlin organ builder Carl August Buchholz , who also created the Buchholz organ in St. Nikolai and rebuilt the Stellwagen organ in St. Marien, created an organ in the church in 1834 .

After the Second World War, as a result of which many Catholics came to Stralsund, the Catholic community continued to grow.

As part of a renovation in 1966 under Pastor Georg Ketz, the entrance was moved from Frankenstrasse to Frankenwall . Some windows and doors were bricked up and plastered. The new chancel was built on the north side of the church. The Dresden architect Friedrich Press designed the altar wall as a “ Red Sea ” with undulating bricks .

The parish merged on January 1, 2020 with the parishes of Maria Rosenkranzkönigin (Demmin) and St. Bonifatius (Bergen) to form the parish of St. Bernhard Stralsund / Rügen / Demmin in the Deanery of Western Pomerania of the Diocese of Berlin . The Trinity Church is the parish church of this parish.

Interior

In 1815 a copy of the painting "The Descent of Christ from the Cross" made by Johann Heinrich Tischbein for the Jakobikirche Stralsund was obtained by Pastor Wendelin Zink. In 1817 a Gothic Madonna figure came into the possession of the church from a donation from the Greifswald saline inspector Wörrishöfer; it stands today on St. Joseph's altar. The editor of the weekly "Sundine", Friedrich von Suckow , gave the church in 1829 a painting by Domenico Zampieri with the title "The painful mother". At that time it was worth around 1,000 Reichstaler.

The interior includes:
