St. George's Church (Schermbeck)
The St. George's Church is an Evangelical Lutheran church in Schermbeck (Wesel district, North Rhine-Westphalia). It was built on the foundations of a chapel in the early 15th century and consecrated in 1415. The parish belongs to the Evangelical Church District Wesel of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland .
Church building
It is an east-facing , originally three-aisled, late Gothic pseudo-basilica . The nave closes off to the east with a 5/8 choir . The building is made of red brick . After a fire in 1483, the north aisle was not rebuilt, which explains the current asymmetrical design: the roof in the south extends far down over the south aisle. In the north, where the aisle is missing, the roof is higher. There the side walls of the nave and tower form one level.
The mighty west tower is divided into three storeys by surrounding cornices and shows corner brackets made of stone . Large tracery panels are embedded in the two lower tower floors, while smaller panels on the upper floor surround the sound openings . The originally pointed spire was replaced by the current flat pyramid roof after a fire in 1742 . A golden swan has adorned the spire since 1730, a symbol of Lutheranism .
Interior and outfit
The interior is characterized by a simple ribbed vault and large pointed arch windows in the choir area. Today the church has two aisles. Where the north aisle originally began, the room is now closed off with a high, poorly structured inner wall. A gallery has been drawn in on the north and west sides .
In a bomb attack on March 23, 1945, the church lost almost all of its furnishings. The pulpit from the 17th century, a panel from 1596 with the ten commandments and an organ with a Renaissance case were destroyed. Only the relocated altarpiece from the school of the Wesel painter Derick Baegert could be saved. The church was rebuilt from 1945 to 1951.
