St. Laurentius Church (Zuchau)
The Protestant St. Laurentius Church in the Barby district of Zuchau , which dates back to the 11th century, is the oldest building in the village.
History and description
It was built as a fortified church made of quarry stones with a striking transverse rectangular tower ("Sachsenturm") and the rectangular nave . Both parts of the building were connected by a double arcade. It is not known when the transept-like extension on the south side was created. The columned portal on the south front, which shows animal representations in relief in a tympanum, dates from the 12th century . The pillars are decorated with various decorative elements. All parts of the building are covered with a gable roof. In 1739 baroque alterations were made to the nave , and in 2011 extensive renovation work began on the roof and the outer walls. In this context, the transept extension got a gable cross.
The interior of the nave is closed with a wooden barrel ceiling, which was formerly painted with a starry sky. The font has been preserved from the Romanesque period . The pulpit altar , the stalls with their crowning carvings and the painted galleries date from the era of baroque redesign . The organ is currently not playable. The church peal consists of three bells , the oldest of which dates from 1350.
