description

At the end of the 19th century Großmühlingen had become so prosperous due to its productive agriculture that the residents decided in 1882 to tear down the old Romanesque church building and build a new representative church. A brick building was built in the neo-Gothic style. The building consists of the west tower, the main nave, two side aisles and a retracted choir with a retracted apse . The tower with a square base is of a high six-sided helmet peak crowned which has also been built of bricks. The other components have gable roofsthat are covered with dark bricks. All windows are pointed arched and separated from each other by risalits on the main nave . In contrast to the main nave, two rows of windows are let into the front sides of the side aisles, three large windows above and three small ones below. The side aisles are also decorated with corner projections.

Inside the new building received a wooden trapezoidal ceiling. Galleries were built on the west side and in the side aisles. The organ building company Wilhelm Rühlmann from Zörbig built an organ on the west gallery in 1884 . The wooden pulpit , decorated with inlays , dates from the year of construction in 1882. In the same year, the stone six-sided baptismal font was made, which was decorated with ornaments. The church has two groups of wooden figures from the 16th and 17th centuries, a copy of Raphael's painting “Madonna Terranuova” from 1505 from 1840 .

Three bells originally hung in the tower, of which only the largest remains. After it became clear in the first quarter of the 20th century that the church from 1882 was oversized, it was left to decay during the period of anti-church politics in the GDR . In 1975 it was completely abandoned, in 1995 the roof structure collapsed. One year later and seven years after the political change in the GDR, the reconstruction of the church began. He was later supported by the church building association founded in 2005, and on October 6, 2007 the re-inauguration could be celebrated.

The church is dedicated to the apostle Peter .
