The Sankt-Stephanus-Kirche is a Protestant church in the district of Bahrendorf of the municipality of Sülzetal in Saxony-Anhalt .

It is located north of the center of Bahrendorf on the Ringstrasse and belongs to the Egeln parish of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

Architecture and history

The core of the church goes back to the early Gothic period . The church tower is on a rectangular plan to the west of the nave. The two pointed helmets that crown the tower are striking. The steep sound openings of the tower are laid out in three parts and provided with small double columns with capitals in the shape of a goblet. Some of them were added later.

The nave is elongated and closed off at the east end with a three-sided choir. In 1749 the ship was rebuilt and increased. Two walled portals designed as pointed arches have been preserved on the north and south sides. On the east side there is still a window in its original design.

In the second quarter of the 18th century, a burial chapel of the von Hackeborn family was added to the south side of the church . The baroque style building is decorated with shell niches.

The interior of the church is simply designed and is spanned by a flat, plastered barrel ceiling. There is a short horseshoe gallery in the western part of the nave . On it is a 1907 by Wilhelm Rühlmann sen. from Zörbig created organ . On the north side of the choir of the church there is an epitaph made of alabaster and black marble for the wolf Christian von Hackeborn, who died in 1729. It has allegorical decorations and shows a half-length figure of the deceased.

In the church there was a pulpit altar created at the end of the 19th century . It was removed in the course of a modernization in the 1970s and replaced by an altar and a pulpit made of rubble stones . On June 1, 2004, the church received an altar painting on which the biblical stories of guilt and reconciliation are presented on several panels. The painting was created by prisoners of the Torgau correctional facility .

In the local register of monuments , the church is registered as a monument under registration number 094 11959 .

The parsonage belonging to the church is rented out, but also houses community rooms.
