The St. Wenceslas Church ( Kostel svatého Václava ) in Václavice ( Wenceslas Hill ) is a branch church of Nové Město nad Metují in the diocese of Hradec Králové . It was built around the middle of the 13th century in the historically important place Dobenín .

history

The free-standing bell tower

The church, which was first mentioned in 1369, was probably built much earlier, as a parish is occupied for 1259. It was located in a strategically important place above the Branka pass, which is known as "zemská brána" ( Landestor ). Presumably for this reason it was consecrated to the Bohemian national saint Wenceslaus . Together with the Provodov market , it belonged to the Břevnov Monastery . Eleven villages are said to have belonged to their parish. After the market was moved from Provodov to Politz , Provodov and with him also Dobenín lost its importance.

During the Hussite Wars , the church was destroyed along with Dobenín on January 3, 1424. Although the settlement became extinct as a result, the church was repaired in 1568. At that time the knights Straka von Nedabilitz ( Strakové z Nedabilic ) built a family tomb in the church, in which Peter Straka von Nedabilitz ( Petr z Nedabilic , † 1646), among others , was buried. Around 1700, Anna Viktoria Ludmila Kolowrat -Liebsteinsky († 1738), wife of the landlord of the Nachod estate , Lorenzo Piccolomini , donated the carved main altar to St. Wenceslas Church.

In 1786, Rudolph Joseph von Colloredo acquired parcels of the church property according to emphyteutic law and founded the village Václavice below the historic Dobenín, the place name of which is derived from the church. The church building and the interior were also damaged in the German War of 1866, when the battle of Nachod took place on the plateau between Václavice and Vysokov . The killed soldiers were buried in the church cemetery. A comprehensive renovation of the church was donated in 1925 by the textile industrialist Josef Bartoň-Dobenín , who in 1912 was given the title of nobility “von Dobenín”.

Architecture and equipment

The church, originally built in the Romanesque style, was probably built in the 13th / 14th centuries. Rebuilt in the 15th century in the Gothic style. The single-nave building with a cross vault in the rectangular presbytery was given a small vestibule in the west and a sacristy annex on the south side. In the gable of the vestibule, a coat of arms with an abbot's staff refers to the original owner, the Břevnov monastery.

Next to the church is a free-standing bell tower with two bells.
