The Catholic Church of St. Egidius (Czech: Kostel svatého Jiljí ) in the East Bohemian town of Svitavy (German: Zwittau) in the Czech Republic was originally built in the Middle Ages . The listed building is located on the eastern edge of the city, on the left bank of the Zwittawa River .

History and description

From 1679 to 1689 the Romanesque church was rebuilt in the Baroque style. At the beginning of the 17th century, the chapel of the dead and the chapel of St. Nicholas were added to the side. The basilica with a higher main nave and two lower aisles is closed by a semicircular choir .

During the renovation, the main nave was raised and given a vaulted ceiling. In 1726 the sacristy and the oratory were added. About the chapels were galleries built, leading to which lateral stairs. On the west side there is a square tower, which was connected to the church by adding the entrance hall. The tower helm was put on in 1732. The roof of the tower and the church were originally covered with shingles , these were replaced by slate in the 18th century .

Furnishing

The altar from 1684 is decorated with an image of St. Aegidius (Czech: svatý Jiljí ), the patron saint of the church. The picture is a work by Ludwig Geissler from 1737. On the sides are two statues of St. Peter and St. Paul . The Archangel Michael is depicted between angels above the altar . The mortuary chapel is decorated with stucco work by Baltazar Fontana from Brno .
