St. Agatha auf der Wiese is a pilgrimage church in the market town of Lana in South Tyrol .

history

The previous Romanesque building was first mentioned in a document in 1306. According to tradition, a conflagration raged in Merano in 1347 , which is why the citizens of Merano vowed to go to church every year. The last procession took place in 1954. The rededication of the church to the patron saint of conflagrations, St. Agatha , took place in 1440 by the auxiliary bishop of Trient Vitalis. The current choir and tower were built around 1520. The nave dates from 1615. During the excavations in 1990, a Romanesque apse and remains of high Gothic paintings were uncovered.

Furnishing

The interior is designed in the early Baroque style. The choir has a ridge vault from the 17th century. The triumphal frescoes date from the 16th century. The high altar painting from 1635 was created by the painter Paul Honegger .
