Parish Church of St. Alban in Offenau

The parish church of St. Alban in Offenau is a Catholic parish church , the baroque shape of which goes back to a new building from 1751.

history

As early as 1400 there was a Gothic chapel at the current location of the St. Alban's Church, which was initially a branch church of St. Kilian in Duttenberg and was raised to its own parish in 1438 . Offenau then belonged to the Archdiocese of Mainz , from which the election of the church patron, the martyr Alban von Mainz , who was buried in Mainz, probably proceeded. In the late 15th century Offenau came into the possession of the Teutonic Order and has therefore remained predominantly Catholic up to the present day. The chapel was enlarged around 1500. During the Thirty Years' War , during which an evangelical pastor preached in Offenau from 1632 to 1634, this predecessor building fell apart.

Finally, in 1751, under the Teutonic Order Commander Johann Christoph von Buseck, a new baroque building was built by master builder Franz Häffele . Some components of the previous structure were still incorporated into the new building. That is why frescoes from the 15th century have been preserved in the sacristy in the tower .

In 1826 the neighboring rectory was built. In 1852 the cemetery originally located around the church was closed. The church has been rebuilt and renovated several times since it was built. In 1877 the side altars were renewed, in 1939 an annex was added to the church and the entrance relocated. In 1950 three new bells were procured, and the interior was renovated in 1957. In 1963 the bell tower was also renovated. The outside of the church was renovated in 1972/73 and the inside again in 1980/81 and 2003.
