St. Albertus Magnus Church, Waldsiedlung

The St. Albertus Magnus Church is a Catholic church in the Leverkusen district of Schlebusch / Waldsiedlung. It is the seat of the parish of the same name in the pastoral care area of Leverkusen Southeast. The basic idea of the architect Josef Lehmbrock is the symbol of the ship. The designs for the building come from diocesan building councilor Erich Valder, and the building contractor was Josef Traut.

history

With the development of the forest settlement in the Leverkusen district of Schlebusch around 1934, the need for churches in this district, which is a few kilometers away from the parish of St. Andreas , arose . The first considerations were made as early as 1935 and the St. Albertus Magnus building association was founded. This was banned in 1936 during the National Socialist era and the money already collected for building the church was confiscated. Further efforts were unsuccessful until 1948, only then could the property negotiations be concluded and the competition for the design for the church put out to tender. The old building association was also restored for this purpose. The Cologne architects Borgart and Volmer won the competition, but in retrospect the plan turned out to be too expensive. Only then was the decision taken to build an emergency church, which Johannes Hanauer was commissioned to plan and build. The groundbreaking ceremony for this church was carried out on May 14, the laying of the foundation stone on July 29, 1950; on November 19, 1950, the church could already be designated. The interior of the church is surrounded by a Zollinger vault .

As early as 1952, Opladen wrote about this church: “ The construction that was carried out was built as a purely functional building in view of its later use. One consciously renounced any external sacred character. [...] the interior decoration was designed as simple as possible so as not to anticipate a later final church decoration. "And" All in all, you can call this a pleasant start. [...] But we want and have to go on. [...] one day we will have to build. ". In the next few years, the conversion of the emergency church into a parish hall and the construction of a "real" parish church were planned. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on August 31, 1958, and the foundation stone was laid on November 15, 1958. The church consecration was made on November 15, 1959 by Joseph Cardinal Frings . An extension made in a second construction phase took place in 1961.

Bells
