Parish Church of St. Aloisius

The Catholic parish of St. Aloisius Herdorf belongs to the Diocese of Trier and was merged in 2007 with the neighboring parish of Alsdorf (Westerwald) to form a parish community.

history

The missionary work in Hellertal originated in the parish of Haiger , whose parish outlined in 1048 included the area of today's parish. The area to the left of the Heller belonged to the Daaden parish (parish since 1219), the area to the right of the Heller to Kirchen (parish since 1325). A chapel was built on the Königsmauer, a flood-protected elevation in the Hellertal, probably before the Thirty Years War , but the exact year is not known. This chapel was used as a Simultaneum after the Reformation . It fell apart in the 18th century and was replaced by a successor building in 1798. This church still serves the Protestant community of Herdorf-Struthütten, the Catholic parish received a new and larger church building in 1885, as the number of Catholics had increased significantly due to Herdorf's considerable development in mining and metallurgy in the 19th century. On November 22nd, 1844, the previous Herdorf vicarage was raised to an independent parish.

Parish church

As the number of Catholics continued to increase, Pastor Thomé began on September 15, 1884 with the construction of the current Catholic Church. It was consecrated on December 15, 1885 and presents itself as a three-aisled , neo-Gothic building with a west tower in front. The design came from the architect Reinhold Wirtz , the construction was carried out by the company Becker und Böhm from Bonn. Between 1958 and 1960 two aisles and a new sacristy were added.

The election of St. Aloisius von Gonzaga as parish patron is due in particular to the fact that during the Counter-Reformation the Jesuit order was very active in this region and Jesuit saints were particularly venerated there.

The organ in the parish church is one of the largest church organs in the region with its 3,340 pipes.
