St. Antonius (Wesel)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

St. Antonius is a Roman Catholic church on the eastern outskirts of Wesel on the Lower Rhine. When it was completed in 1924, it was the first church building in what was then the parish of Obrighoven-Lackhausen . Since 2013 it has been part of the parish of St. Nicholas .

location

The church building of St. Antonius is located in the Wesel district of Obrighoven-Lackhausen, which was an independent parish until 1969. It is located on Sankt-Antonius-Weg, which branches off south of the federal highway 58 . Due to its location south of the main road, it officially belongs to the district of Wittenberg and not to Obrighoven , which is located north of the road , but Wittenberg was historically part of Obrighoven and is still often regarded as part of Obrighoven today. In any case, St. Antonius was built in the 1920s as a church for the entire Obrighoven and is still the only Catholic church on the eastern outskirts of Wesel. Also to the east of the city center are the Catholic Churches of St. Franziskus in Schepersfeld and the Church of Peace to the Holy Angels in Fusternberg .

history

Already in the late Middle Ages, the Obrighoven peasantry was part of the sphere of influence of the city of Wesel and, as part of the Wesel parish, did not have its own church building. After the Reformation in the 16th century, Obrighoven was predominantly Calvinist, but there was still no church for any denomination. Since 1734 the local Catholics were officially assigned to the parish of St. Martini in Wesel city center.

In the early 20th century, the establishment of its own church was pushed. Through the commitment of the citizens of Obrighoven, it was achieved that from November 1919 a regular mass could take place in the hall of a restaurant next to today's church. In 1921 a church building association was founded, and construction of the church began in July 1923, mainly through private donations. Inside it was equipped with a baroque main altar and a supposed relic of Saint Anthony of Padua .

After the Second World War , it gained great local importance for a time, as the inner-city churches had been destroyed and St. Antonius was now much more popular. In the post-war period, a youth home, a kindergarten and a rectory were built in the vicinity of the church. In 1966 it was raised to an independent parish. As part of a comprehensive renovation, the building received a new church tower in 1970, and the nave was enlarged. In 2012 another renovation took place. On May 19, 2013, St. Antonius and three other parishes in Wesel were merged to form the new parish of St. Nikolaus. Since then, this has comprised nine churches in the Wesel districts on the right bank of the Rhine.
