St. Antonius Hermit

St. Antonius Eremit is the Roman Catholic church of Evinghoven , a district of Rommerskirchen in the Rhine district of Neuss .

history

The Antonius-der-Große - patronage (also: Antonius der Eremit or Einsiedler ) goes back to a chapel that was built in 1750 by the Cologne Antoniterkloster in Evinghoven. The Antoniterkloster had a large manor in the village, but initially there was no chapel of its own, only a saint's house . The Evinghoven believers had to visit the chapel in neighboring Ikoven to attend the service . In order to have its own chapel on site, the Preceptor of the Cologne monastery had the little holy house expanded to become the St. Antonius Eremit Chapel. The associated parish church remained in Hoeningen even after the new St. Stephan chapel was built .

Between 1875 and 1879, the architect August Carl Lange built his own church in Evinghoven in the neo-Gothic style. The church has a west tower, a single nave and a 5/8 choir closure in the east. Narrow corridors, not even a meter wide, separated from the nave by columns, and high windows create the architecturally skilful spatial impression of a basilica. The construction costs for a village church were much lower than the erection of side aisles would have meant.

In 1893 St. Antonius Hermit was elevated to parish church. Today St. Antonius Eremit belongs to the parish community Rommerskirchen-Gilbach.
