St. Augustine

St. Augustine is a Catholic parish, whose parish center in the south of Düsseldorf district of Eller is.

history

A church building association founded shortly after the First World War to build another Catholic church in Eller was given a small church in the early 1930s that had previously served as an emergency church in Wuppertal and in the two Düsseldorf parishes of St. Mary's Conception and St. Paul would have. The wooden church, corresponding to the type of a village church with a side tower, was built in 1932 on Deutzer Straße and consecrated to him as a branch church of St. Gertrud in memory of the great church teacher Augustine , whose 1500th anniversary of death had been celebrated two years earlier. The congregation was elevated to rectorate in 1935 and established under canon law as a rectorate parish in 1955 . Since 2000 she has been part of the Eller-Lierenfeld parish community.

Since this church was partially destroyed in the Second World War, the community decided in 1960 to build a simple brick building by Emil Steffann , who, like in St.Maria in den Benden, together with Nikolaus Rosiny built a church with a parish hall under one roof around a central light and Inner courtyard with windowless outer walls. Construction work began in 1963. On December 14, 1980, the Cologne Auxiliary Bishop Hubert Luthe consecrated the church.

After the church of St. Hedwig in southern Eller was profaned in 2006, the large wooden cross created by Hans Karst in 1973 with the inclined crucified Christ was transferred from there to St. Augustine and placed in front of the church. Together with St. Gertrud and St. Michael in Lierenfeld , St. Augustinus has belonged to the parish association since 2000, and to the Eller-Lierenfeld parish community since 2005.
