St. Michael (Düsseldorf-Lierenfeld)
The Catholic parish church of St. Michael in the Düsseldorf district of Lierenfeld was built at the beginning of the 20th century and considerably expanded in the middle of the 20th century, only to be restored to its original dimensions in 2007.
St. Michael was built between 1911 and 1912 by the architect P. Milles in neo-baroque brick architecture. Thanks to the neighboring Mannesmann steel works, now a large-capacity discotheque (see Stahlwerk (Düsseldorf) ), the community grew to well over 10,000 members. After the severe damage in World War II, the church was extended in 1956 according to plans by the architect Kurt Schweflinghaus and completely redesigned by removing all neo-baroque building and design elements. The tower lost its baroque dome and was raised by a few meters.
After the steel mill was closed, the community shrank significantly. A comprehensive building renovation was necessary in 2000. The oversized building was up for discussion for demolition. However, the Archdiocese of Cologne wanted to keep the church. It was decided to deconstruct. This happened in the years 2004 to 2007 by demolishing the nave , in which two thirds of the building structure of the church were sacrificed. Part of the old outer wall has now been preserved as a fence around the atrium-like entrance courtyard.
Since 2000, the parish of St. Michael, together with the two parishes of St. Gertrud and St. Augustine in Eller, has been part of the Eller- Lierenfeld parish community .
organ
The organ was rebuilt by Weimbs Orgelbau in 1980 as Opus 148. It has 25 registers on three manuals, the first manual being a coupling manual.
