geography

Lierenfeld is located southeast of the inner city area, has an area of 2.44 km², around 10,600 inhabitants, and borders the districts of Eller , Flingern and Oberbilk and is thus in the transition area between inner-city perimeter block development and relaxed, suburban construction. It is about as close to the Eller Forst and Unterbacher See recreational areas as to the old town .

The small residential area of Lierenfeld is located in the east of the district, bordering Eller, between the industrial Königsberger Straße and the busy Erkrather Straße. On January 1, 2006, the district boundary between Lierenfeld and Eller was changed, which meant that Lierenfeld grew by 29 hectares .

history

Heimgarten settlement

The area in which the current district is located has belonged to the city of Düsseldorf since 1384. The name Lierenfeld has been attested since 1395. In the wooded and swampy area that was far outside the city wall, there were isolated farms. In 1855 only 219 people lived in Lierenfeld.

The development of the district began with the age of industrialization. From 1860, Belgian immigrants set up brickworks in Lierenfeld. In 1919 the Düsseldorf entrepreneur Albert Schöndorff relocated his wagon construction company from Derendorf to Lierenfeld. The plant laid the foundation for the industrial development of the district. DUEWAG AG developed from the wagon factory and produced trams on Königsberger Strasse up to 2000. There were other industrial companies along the almost parallel Erkrather Straße.

The district received its own church in 1911/12 with the Catholic parish church of St. Michael . In the 1920s, on the occasion of the GeSoLei, the Heimgarten settlement was built in the style of Dutch courtyards. Row houses were built around two central squares using a two-story, uniform design. At that time the settlement was isolated and without infrastructure between the industrial area and fields. This deficiency was partly alleviated by the kitchen gardens behind the houses. The advantage for the residents was the proximity to the industrial workplaces with the simultaneous possibility of a certain self-sufficiency.

Internment camp for Sinti and Roma (1937)

The end of Erkrather Straße and thus to the industrial facilities was formed by a block of several large apartment buildings through which an archway still leads to the small garden city . Starting from the Heimgarten settlement, a small residential area characterized by one and two family houses developed from the 1930s onwards. In the direction of Eller, after the Second World War, a large number of apartment buildings followed by the housing cooperative Düsseldorf-Ost, which is now based in Lierenfeld, and one of its founders was Albert Schöndorff .

At the time of National Socialist rule, there was a camp on Höherweg in which a total of over 200 Sinti were interned between 1937 and 1945 . Numerous prisoners were deported and murdered. On the railway bridge on the corner of Höherweg and Posener Strasse, a memorial plaque commemorates this camp. In memory of the persecution of the Sinti and Roma, the sculptor Otto Pankok created a memorial that stands in Düsseldorf's Carlstadt . It shows the girl Ehra with a ball . The child was one of the few survivors of the Höherweg camp.

Albert Schöndorff, who had a decisive influence on the history of the district, was also a victim of the Nazis as a Jew and was murdered in Auschwitz .

traffic

The main traffic artery is Erkrather Straße, which later merges into Reisholzer Straße. This street is the main connection between the city center and the Eller district and is very busy. Another important traffic artery is the Königsberger Straße.

The Schlesische Straße stop plays an important role in public transport . Here you can change between buses, trams and trams with direct connections to the city center, airport, exhibition center and Neuss Hbf. Lines 734 and 736 connect Lierenfeld with Erkrath , Gerresheim and Unterbilk . On weekends and before public holidays, the Rheinbahn night service also stops here .

The Düsseldorf-Lierenfeld depot is located on the Düsseldorf freight bypass .

politics

In Lierenfeld there is a local association of the CDU and a local association of the SPD . Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen and FDP organize themselves in city district groups. Three councilors represent the Lierenfeld municipal electoral district in the Düsseldorf city council: Burkhard Albes (SPD, directly elected), Christian Rütz (CDU) and Mirko Rohloff (FDP). Lierenfeld belongs to the area of responsibility of the district representation 8. The district representatives Claudia Albes (SPD) and Christian Rütz (CDU) come from Lierenfeld.

Economy, infrastructure and public institutions

Punk rock band Die Toten Hosen

Lierenfeld is still largely characterized by the manufacturing industry, the area of which is about twice as large as that used for residential construction.

Free factory halls attracted a young, urban subculture as well as the disco and party scene in the 1990s . For more than a decade, the former Mannesmann industrial plant has been a well-known venue for events such as For example : gay mandance , summer beach, street food festival or Christmas goose dinner. The at times nationally known Gate 3 on the border with Lierenfeld has an eventful history behind it, in which club concerts were also held, and for the time being welcomes the "Ambis Club" to its premises.

Düsseldorf's best-known punk rockers, Die Toten Hosen , have moved into their quarters in the rough charm of industrial architecture, as have the theater canteen or the neighboring artists' quarter Weltkunstzimmer (already in the Flingern district).

The urban public transport company Rheinbahn AG has its headquarters on Lierenfelder Straße and operates a workshop and its largest depot there . The Startup Hub and Coworking Space Factory Campus for collaborative work by young companies and creative people is being built in the former premises of the Metso Lindemann company.

In addition, there are medium-sized companies and suppliers for craft, industry and commerce such as Thyssenkrupp Schulte , so that the overalls stand for Lierenfeld's economy as well as the web designer or the party goer.

population

The proportion of foreign citizens is 23.5%, above the urban average of 16.9%. With 1.7 children per family, the district has many children; the proportion of single parents is over 37%, and unemployment is over 20%.

Despite the social problems that the district is struggling with and the formative industry, there are also idyllic streets in Lierenfeld, where mostly middle-class families live.
