Nature and landscape protection

The part to the south-east of the Kikweg near Unterbach has been designated as the Eller Forest nature reserve with around 95 hectares since 1954 . The north-western areas of the forest are in the landscape protection area of the city of Düsseldorf .

The Eller Forest originated - like many of today's nature reserves in Düsseldorf - from an extensive marshland of the Old Rhine in the south of Düsseldorf, which in ancient times was largely drained and whose water was concentrated in the Unterbach lake system. For the first time, parts of the forest were protected as the Eller Forest bird sanctuary in 1935 . In the 1980s it was recognized that it was worthy of protection, the drainage ditches were filled in in the protected part and the management of the forest largely stopped.

The part of the forest, which is under nature protection, is characterized by a system of wet meadows and forest pools . In the outer regions of the forest there is a from oak , ash and hornbeam educated Bruchwald that toward its center in a Erlenbruchwald passes: The black alder is the only species that can exist in this almost permanently flooded area.

Since the end of the 2000s, the flora and fauna of the Eller Forest has been subjected to intensive monitoring. In addition to the amphibians typical of wetlands , 41 breeding bird species have been identified there, including the gray heron , marsh tit , wren , goshawk and reed warbler . Water feather and elm hairstreak can be found on the Red List of Endangered Species .
