The Düsseldorf freight bypass line is a railway line that is now partially closed and connects the Düsseldorf-Reisholz freight yard and the Düsseldorf-Derendorf freight yard , both on the Cologne-Duisburg railway line , via the former Düsseldorf-Lierenfeld freight yard .
The freight bypass enables freight trains to bypass the heavily frequented Düsseldorf main station on a direct, separate route.
history
As early as 1863, the Cologne-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft built a freight line between the Lierenfeld and Wehrhahn branches at that time, but it was closed again in 1880.
In 1932, the old route was put back into operation and linked to the main Cologne – Duisburg route at no level.
Todays situation
With the closure of the former Düsseldorf-Derendorf marshalling yard , the freight bypass railway suddenly lost its importance. Of the total of three routes crossing the main route, only the northernmost one to the Rethel branch is still in operation. In the western ramp of the southernmost underpass with direct access to Lierenfeld, concrete columns have been erected for overhead line masts.
