The Roman Catholic Church of St. Barbara is a characteristic church building in Andreasberg , a district of Bestwig in the Hochsauerlandkreis in North Rhine-Westphalia .

History and architecture

The church, built in 1905, became too small due to the influx of miners. It was extensively expanded between 1962 and 1963 according to plans by the architect Heinrich Stegemann . The choir with a sacristy was rebuilt. The new elongated choir closes with a round apse with a wreath of eleven small arched windows . It is significantly narrower than the longhouse . The intensely colored paintings on the windows were made by Wilhelm Rengshausen in 1963. They show symbolic representations of the seven sacraments . A flat ceiling was drawn into the interior. The new church tower is crowned with a pyramid helmet.

Measure against woodworm infestation

Due to acute woodworm infestation , thermal measures were necessary to prevent damage. The pews and other parts of the facility were moved to a stationary thermal chamber in Lippstadt and the organ was covered with special foils.
