St. Bartholomew

The St. Bartholomew Church is the Evangelical Lutheran town church of Marktredwitz in the Upper Franconian district of Wunsiedel . It has been in existence since at least 1140, with all additions in their current form since 1922.

Building history

Nothing is known about the appearance of the first church building. Since a pastor of Redwitz was mentioned in a deed of donation around 1140, one can assume that a church was already in existence at that time. The first tangible church building dates back to 1384, when the castle of the Lords of Redwitz was converted into today's old town hall and the castle chapel as a church. A striking remnant of the building is the so-called Luginsland, the former keep , which is integrated into the building.

The Gothic choir in its current form has existed since around 1480, the nave since 1502, this year is placed above the main portal. The vaulting of the church took place in 1522 in the early renaissance style .

A town fire in 1534 severely damaged the church building, the tower and the bells were destroyed, after which it was only rebuilt up to the bell base. Repairs to the church were carried out in 1579 and 1607, and the tower was completed in 1615. In 1621 the roof and the pavement of the church were repaired.

Another city fire in 1822 destroyed the church tower, whereupon the current tower was built in 1825. The bells were cast in 1824 and 1828 by the Eger bell caster Christoph di Valle.

Renovations took place in 1837 and 1883, restorations from 1922 to 1926, 1953 and 2010. In the years 2001-2003 the church interior was redesigned.

To celebrate the Reformation anniversary in 2017 , a fifth was added to the existing four bells. The peace prayer of the former mayor of Marktredwitz, Georg Leopold, is engraved on this.

Elements of the church

Steeple

Steeple

The current church tower was built in 1825, as a result of the town fire of 1822, which destroyed its predecessor. It is built in the classical style of gray sandstone and houses a two-storey tower room at the level of the surrounding gallery, which was inhabited continuously until 1945. In 1911 the church tower received an electric clock.

A height mark from the Nazi era is attached to the outside wall next to the outside staircase. The swastika has been removed, but the eagle is still clearly visible. The circumferential, barely legible writing reads "Deutsches Reich Höhenmarke".

Luginsland

This second tower of the church was the keep of the castle of the Lords of Redwitz until 1384. It is made of quarry stone , but has been plastered since 1982/1983.

sacristy

The sacristy, a small building on the east side of the church tower, was built in 1922. In 1833 an "unfinished sacristy" was mentioned, a picture from 1879 shows a building on the west side of the church tower, which could have served as a sacristy.

Longhouse

The nave was built in 1502 and vaulted in 1522. It has a length of 59 Roman feet, about 17.50 m, and a width of 48 Roman feet, about 14.23 m, which allows two possible conclusions: Either the Roman foot measurement was still common in the region around 1500, or else the building stands on the foundations of an older, probably high-Gothic complex. The fact that Redwitz was a parish as early as 1140 and owned a church in 1384 at the latest speaks in favor of the latter assumption.

pulpit

The pulpit is a late Renaissance work from 1613. It was donated by Johann Scharff, Richter zu Wiesau , and his wife Maria Salome Steinhauser. In 1683 it was renovated by the Redwitz parish and the walkway added. On this the four great church fathers Ambrosius , Hieronymus , Gregorius and Augustine as well as Martin Luther are represented, the pictures on the pulpit show the four evangelists Matthew , Mark , Lukas and Johannes . On the sound cover of the pulpit stands a figure of Saint Michael about one meter high .

Sacrament House

The approximately 5.30 m high Gothic tabernacle dates back to 1490; this year is carved into the base. In the crown, St. Bartholomew and two angels are depicted; the latter hold banners with excerpts from Thomas Aquinas' hymn "de corpore Christi" in their hands. They are "ECCE PANIS ANGE [LORUM]" and "FACTUS CIBUS [VIATORUM]". It is believed that a master builder from Cheb created the work of art out of yellow sandstone. It is the only tabernacle of its kind that has survived in the region.

Baptismal font

The baptismal font was probably created around 1700, as in 1696 a donation of 150 guilders was received from Christoph Liebmann for a baptismal font at the parish. Since then it seems to have been preserved; In 1924 it was renovated.

Ceiling and wall paintings in the choir

Ceiling paintings

In 1953 Franz Wiedl rediscovered and conserved late Gothic vault paintings in the choir during a church restoration . In 2010 they were restored by Matthias Krämer. They represent the twelve apostles, and below the pulpit there is an image of the Lamentation of Christ .

Ölberg / Leopold's Crypt

A recessed in a niche was to the 17th century on the south east wall of the nave of Olives , which was converted into a burial place for the deceased on September 22 Redwitzer pastor Stephan Leopold 1670th According to a sheet metal plaque that was attached at least until 1891, the place is also the final resting place for Johann Georg Leopold, Inspector zu Redwitz. The former Mount of Olives can only be recognized by the late Gothic wickerwork below the lattice that represents the fence of the Gethsemane Garden .
