The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Benedikt is a Gothic hall church in Postmünster in the Lower Bavarian district of Rottal-Inn . It belongs to the parish of St. Benedikt Postmünster, which has been part of the parish association of parish churches in the parish church of Landau of the diocese of Passau since September 1st, 2018 .

History and architecture

The church in Postmünster was built around the year 1485 on the west side of the choir arch after a new year . The core of the masonry of the choir may date from the 14th century. The exterior has been changed several times. The west tower is neo-Gothic.

The late Gothic building typical of the region is characterized by its stately dimensions. The continuous crown of the vault underlines the unity of the room. The overall impression is shaped by the long lines of the transverse pillars with pointed, transversely aligned barrel vaults in the nave with four yokes, in which the vault figures are formed in a bent row. The nave is only wider than the choir by the width of the pillars. The choir of three yokes with different depths ends in a three-eighths ending . The vault ribs are supported by brackets that are placed in front of the wall pillars in the choir of the undivided wall, in the nave. In the west there is a west gallery arched under three bays, above that a wooden baroque organ gallery. A cycle of pictures from the Passion is painted on the parapet of the gallery, which was commissioned by various donors in 1622 after surviving the threat of the plague. Coats of arms from 1642 can be found on the vault of the end of the choir, the other vault paintings have been roughly restored.

Furnishing

The high altar is a Rococo replica from 1947 based on a design by Hans Miller from Munich, in which original baroque wooden figures were incorporated, with sculptures by Jakob Christ from Passau. Particularly noteworthy is the central figure of St. Benedict, carried up by an angel, which was created in 1753 by Georg Berger from Triftern. On the side is another baroque figure of St. Benedict with an animated expression, as well as St. James.

The southern side altar with a richly decorated gilded acanthus frame from 1715 is attributed to Stephan Tabor from Schärding. Instead of the former painting, this now contains a remarkable wooden figure of the seated Mother of God from around 1510. At about the same time, there is a carved group of St. Anne herself with a neo-Gothic child on the north wall of the choir . The north side altar is neo-Gothic and dates from 1909, it is equipped with a crucifixion group. A late Gothic Johannes Evangelist around 1500 is on a wall pillar. The expressive and anatomically correct choir arch cross, donated in 1675, was created by the parish churchman Christoph Bendl. The Stations of the Cross paintings by Sebastian Höfele at the end of the 19th century are of remarkable quality.

Cough Mother Chapel

Surroundings

The so-called cough mother chapel on the northeastern outskirts ( Kapellenweg 5 ) was built in 1748 as a pilgrimage destination for people with cough disorders. The small cloverleaf Rococo - central building is accessed through a south projecting straight entrance. The double-shell dome construction shows an inner dome with accompanying half-domes in the conches . The walls are divided by pilasters and a surrounding cornice. The Rococo stucco consists of foliage, lattice and ribbon work , which is designed with angels and flowers. The small altar made of stucco marble is equipped with two columns and pierced with respect to the oval window of the altar conche. Two wooden figures of St. John Evangelista and Sebastian were created around 1480. The building was extensively restored in 2009/2010.
