St. Clemens and St. Urban is the Roman Catholic parish church in the municipality of Schwörstadt in the district of Lörrach . The first church was mentioned for the first time in the 13th century. Today's classical church goes back to a new building in the 1850s.

history

prehistory

The parish of Schwörstadt ("parrochia de Swercstat") was first mentioned in 1246 in a document. The community area extended to the localities of Öflingen until 1810 and Wallbach until 1900. Probably after the introduction of the Reformation in the Markgräflerland in 1556 Niederdossenbach also belonged to the parish area. The church was located on the property that is still used as a cemetery today.

A new church was built between 1609 and 1616, which was consecrated by Constance Auxiliary Bishop Johann Jakob in the year of completion. A four-story bell tower with pointed arched windows was attached to the plain nave in the west. The tower hall also served as an entrance hall; There was an additional side entrance on the south wall of the nave. Inside, a gallery ran across the entire width of the main building. The raised choir had two ogival windows. At the beginning of the 17th century, a family donated a baptismal font that was placed opposite the pulpit.

As a result of the Thirty Years' War , the interior of the church and the baroque main altar consecrated to Saints Clemens and Urban were so badly damaged that the Constance Auxiliary Bishop Georg Sigismund consecrated it.

The ruinous condition of the church was criticized as early as the middle of the 18th century. However, since repair work in 1791 and 1811 could not improve the substantial quality, it was decided in 1849 to completely rebuild.

New building of the church

In the years 1849 to 1853, a new church was built centrally on Dorfstrasse in Schwörstadt according to plans by the Waldshut building inspector Bayer. The consecration took place on January 13, 1853 by the Stetten dean Freiherr von Widerspach.

The side and high altars were added in 1864 and 1888, respectively. They were created by the Marmon art workshop in Sigmaringen . The old altarpiece was moved to the sacristy . The pictures of the Way of the Cross were painted in oil in 1867 and Ludwig Riegger painted the church in 1883.

After the church was only partially renovated in 1934, a thorough interior renovation followed in the years 1960 to 1966, during which the side altars and the altar area were redesigned and the glass windows were replaced.
