St. Cyprian in Bonn

St. Cyprian is the parish church of the old Catholic community in Bonn . It is located on Adenauerallee in the southern part of the city near the banks of the Rhine.

Building description

St. Cyprian is a modern hall church . The basic construction consists of reinforced concrete, which is pinned with bricks. The colored windows made of cast glass are divided by concrete bars.

Above the portal is a relief created by Viktor Eichler , which depicts Christ as the Good Shepherd, who frees a lost sheep from the thorn. The bronze door, also by Viktor Eichler, shows the symbols of the four cardinal virtues of wisdom , justice , bravery and moderation on the outside . On the inside are the symbols of the three divine or theological virtues faith, hope, love (according to 1 Cor 13:13  EU ).

The altar is now on the eastern side wall in front of the largest of the windows. A tower carries the bells and spans the walkway on Adenauerallee like a gate. There are community rooms in the basement of the church.

history

From 1877 to 1934, the old Catholic community at the bishopric of the Old Catholic Church in Germany used the Namen-Jesu-Kirche on Bonngasse for their services. The Friedenskirche was consecrated on the site of today's St. Cyprian Church in 1934 , but it fell to rubble on October 18, 1944 during a bombing raid on Bonn city center. Only the reinforced concrete skeleton and a single bell remained.

After the reconstruction, the new church designed by the architect Otto Firle was consecrated to St. Cyprian of Carthage on July 21, 1957 .

During the renovation in 1994, the orientation was rotated, the stalls were arranged in a semicircle around the altar and the organ was moved to the previous, south-facing sanctuary.
