St. Elmo's Fire (Man in Motion) is a pop / rock - ballad of the British musician John Parr . The song reached number one in the United States and number six in Germany and the United Kingdom for a week on September 7, 1985 .

history

The song was originally developed by David Foster and John Parr for the Canadian athletes Rick Hansen wrote , who was at that time in a wheelchair and traveled around the world. He called his trip the man-in-motion tour . This information served as inspiration for the content and title of the song.

The song served as the theme song for the film St. Elmo's Fire (the title of the song was derived from the title of the film and the motto of the tour mentioned above). It became the first and only number one hit for John Parr in the United States. The soundtrack album of the same name, on which the song appeared, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Album of Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or a Television Special at the 1986 Grammy Awards .

The song did not originally appear on John Parr's self-titled album John Parr , released in 1984 , but because of the single's great success, the song was later added as a bonus song for re-releases.

Some members of the US band Toto sing as a choir in the background of the song and provide the backing vocals . In addition, Steve Porcaro, Steve Lukather and David Paich played many of the keyboard and guitar tracks of the song. The drums were designed by Carlos Vega, who was a stylistic role model for Toto drummer Jeff Porcaro and u. a. was heard on studio albums by Laura Branigan, recorded using electronic Simmons SDS pads. Jeff Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Carlos Vega had known each other since high school and, like David Paich, were sought-after studio musicians in Los Angeles. Carlos committed suicide in 1998, Jeff Porcaro died 6 years earlier.
