St. Evergislus (Brenig)
St. Evergislus is the Roman Catholic parish church of Brenig , a district of Bornheim in the Rhein-Sieg district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). The parish belongs to the pastoral care area Bornheim - An Rhein und Vorgebirge in the dean's office Bornheim ( Archdiocese of Cologne ).
History and architecture
The church in Brenig was first mentioned in a document when it was donated to the Cäcilienstift in Cologne by Archbishop Wichfrid of Cologne in 941 . In 954, Archbishop Bruno brought the relics of St. Evergislus from Tongeren to the monastery. In the following years the church in Brenig was placed under the patronage of this saint. A Holy Blood relic of unknown origin was later placed in the church. It may have been brought from the Holy Land by the Lords of Merode . As a result, an important pilgrimage to Brenig developed until the relic was lost in the secularization around 1800.
The church, which is still Romanesque at its core, had to be completely restored in 1719 due to its disrepair. In the Gothic period the church had already received a new three-story tower with two-part windows and panels on the upper floor. Finally, in 1895, the old nave was completely laid down and an upper floor and a large neo-Gothic church completed by Hermann Ritzefeld according to plans by the architect Gerhard Franz Langenberg .
window
The lead glass windows represent the three solemn festivals of Christmas, Easter, Pentecost, the Annunciation to Mary and the Assumption of Mary in the choir . They come from the artist Jan Schoenacker from the Netherlands. In the nave there are windows that were created by Paul Weigmann .
organ
In the Breniger Church there is an organ , composed of older parts, which was re-consecrated in 1973. The company Weimbs from Hellenthal carried out the conversion .
