St. Georg (Oberdorfen)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Oberdorfens parish church St. Georg stands on a narrow ridge between the Isental and Seebach valleys one kilometer west of Dorfen . It is a stately late Gothic building.

history

The current church replaced a previous building of which nothing is known. It was built in late Gothic style from around 1460. In 1659 the tower, which had become very damaged by the weather, was largely rebuilt. Restorations were around 1754, 1849–55 and around 1980.

description

The building is a late Gothic hall building with a side aisle attached to the north, which served as a burial place for the Zeilhofen lords of the palace. At the SW corner of the nave is the church tower , which has a high point from the roof ridge. The year 1468 is affixed to the choir arch. Only some of the ribs on the four-bay net vault are original. On the late baroque high altar from 1740 with St. George slaying the dragon stands a neurococo tabernacle , in the choir a crucifixion group by Christian Jorhan the Elder (1780). The side altars are dedicated to St. Florian and St. Michael . In the side aisle (Zeilhofer Chapel) there are tombstones of Tobias von und zu Zeilhofen († 1630), Johann Ulrich von Pettenbeckh zu Zeilhofen († 1634) and Jörg Zeilhofer zu Zeilhof († 1486).
