history

A Gothic- style church was built on the site of today's St. George's town church, probably at the time the town wall was built around 1300 . This was destroyed by the effects of the war in 1385. Originally a single-nave Romanesque church building stood there around 1100 , which was demolished for the new building. In 1409 the construction of St. George began. About 70 wall paintings were created around the middle of the 15th century. from 1520 to 1523 Bartholomaeus Rieseberg preached in the church. In 1662 there was a fire inside the church. During the subsequent renovation work, the interior was expanded to include a gallery. In 1848 the tower burned down. When it was rebuilt, the tower was given an octagonal tower end based on the Baroque style.

In 1872 a thorough renovation took place, in the course of which the interior was given a new Gothic look. From 1964 to 1965, the wall paintings that were attached in the 15th century were exposed again and restored and conserved between 1986 and 1990. In 2002 a memorial was dedicated to Rieseberg. In 2004 the exterior of the tower was restored.
