Bartholomaeus Rieseberg

Bartholomaeus Rieseberg (born August 24, 1492 in Mieste , † August 10, 1566 in Gardelegen ; also Bartholomaeus Riseberg ) was a Protestant theologian and student of Martin Luther .

Life

Rieseberg started studying at the age of 17. In 1518, however, he went to Wittenberg to study with Martin Luther. Enthusiastic about his new teaching, Rieseberg traveled through eastern northern Germany as a preacher . In 1520 he was excommunicated after a dispute with the Gardelegen Catholic clergy and had to leave the city as a heretic . Further stations were Wanzleben and from 1520 to 1523 Immenhausen in Hesse . Rieseberg preached there initially in private houses and later in a chapel. In 1523, however, he was arrested and locked in a tower in Grebenstein . With the help of a woman, he managed to escape.

Rieseberg returned to Luther in Wittenberg and then took up a position as a chaplain in Schweinitz on his recommendation . There Rieseberg learned with Bertrand Cramer, a baptized Jew , Hebrew . During a sermon he met the future King Christian III here. from Denmark.

After a short time in Brehna , Rieseberg went to Seyda in 1527 , where he stayed until 1540. He then took a job in Gardelegen, near his birthplace. He had already given his inaugural sermon in the local Marienkirche in November 1539.

He died of the plague on August 10, 1566 in Gardelegen . His body was buried in the choir of the Marienkirche in Gardelegen.

Rieseberg monument in Mieste

Rieseberg, who was valued as one of the most respected pulpit preachers of his time alongside Luther, is considered the reformer of the Altmark .

A memorial was erected to him in Rieseberg's birthplace, Mieste.

In front of the town church of Immenhausen near Kassel is a life-size bronze statue of the reformer.

From his estate is the Immenhausen Gutenberg Bible , remained with handwritten notes obtained.
