St. George (pubic heads)

The former monastery church and today's parish church of St. Georg is located near the Schambach spring on the southern edge of Schamhaupten in the Altmannstein community in the Eichstätt district . The parish of Schamhaupten consists of the villages of Schamhaupten, Sandersdorf , Schafshill and Thannhausen . The patronage of the Church is April 23rd.

In the years 1136 and 1137 an Augustinian canon monastery was founded by the widow Gertrud von Schamhaupten and her daughter Luitgard . However, since there was only an inadequate economic basis, the Schamhaupten monastery never flourished and was finally closed in 1609. The ownership of the monastery was transferred to the University of Ingolstadt . In 1623, after the monastery had been demolished, the nave was rebuilt, whereby the late Gothic choir was retained and incorporated into the new building. The Muggenthalers, a noble family that ruled the neighboring castles of Sandersdorf, Hexenagger and Neuenhinzenhausen, had used the church as a family grave since 1471.

The church is decorated in a baroque style. The high altar was made around 1700, the side altars as well as the church seating and the pulpit were built around 1725 and were moved from the Regensburg Dominican Church to Schamhaupten in 1878. The Romanesque baptismal font on the back wall of the church as well as a crucifix made of red clay (around 1400) and a wooden sculpture of St. Anna Selbdritt, made around 1500, which stands on the right side altar, come from the previous buildings of the current church. Some gravestones and epitaphs of the von Muggenthal family are embedded in the church walls .

The organ , built around 1900 , originally had ten registers , but was enhanced by six registers when it was expanded in 1992.
