The Reformed Church of St. Johann in Davos in the canton of Graubünden is the oldest valley church in the Davos region and the largest with a capacity of 800 visitors. The striking church tower with its six bells is characteristic of the townscape of Davos Platz .

History and equipment

The oldest building structure is dated to the 13th century. In 1528, the Reformation was introduced throughout Davos and thus also in the Church of St. Johann .

The large church tower is 71.2 meters high and was built in 1481. In the 16th century, the tower roof had to be completely renewed after a lightning strike. The fact that the shingle roof has been twisted by 43 percent since then is noticeable, which is due to the sometimes extreme alpine weather conditions . In 2003 the tower was re-shingled. 35 larches were felled and 73,000 shingles were made from the wood.

The current nave was rebuilt in 1909 to accommodate more people. The old pulpit from 1719 was integrated into the new building. In the same year an organ was installed in the north gallery. It comprised 22 registers . Today's organ from 1961 has 30 registers and is on the west gallery. It was created by the Metzler Orgelbau company .

The glass windows from 1928 are by Augusto Giacometti .

From 2007 to 2009, the church was completely renovated, from the tower to the facade to the nave inside the church. In the course of the renovation, the time capsule on the top of the tower roof was opened and refilled for the last time. The previous content has been transferred to the Davos landscape documentation library.

Church organization

The Church of St. Johann belongs to the Evangelical Reformed Church of Graubünden to the parish of Davos Platz and with this to the Colloquium X Davos-Albula .
