St. John

The Evangelical Lutheran village church St. Johannes is in the parish of Teichwitz in the district of Greiz in Thuringia .

history

In 1328 the pastor from Teichwitz, Friedrich von Töpen, was named as a witness in a document. This is considered the first mention of the church , which of course must have existed before. Further research has shown that the village church was first mentioned in an archive on September 1, 1260.

The steeple of the first church building, erected in 1564, has been preserved when the nave was completely rebuilt in 1734. The hall church was built in the early Gothic style and has a few strong buttresses and a compact church tower with a square floor plan. The tower top is stepped and covered with slate. A lantern carries the bell.

The parish received new bells in 1789 .

A church partnership with the evangelical parish of Bad Teinach began as early as 1950 and has been in existence ever since. After 1990 the contacts could be intensified.

After the political change , the parish was able to carry out the restoration of the church, which was completed in 2009. During this work, a local master painter exposed six earlier color versions. The Christians could choose which one would now be realized, they decided on a white and pale gray base tone with blue and gold line decorations. The dedication of the church to John the Baptist took place on the occasion of the festive divine service for the rededication of the church on June 27, 2010, which began with a mass by the regional bishop Ilse Junkermann .

An organ support association formed in 2005 was dedicated to the restoration of the organ , which was completed in 2013. The regional bishop also consecrated the organ.

Since March 26, 1996, the community has belonged to the Protestant parish of Weida in the Superintendentur Gera, together with nine other parishes .

Furnishing

The retracted rectangular chancel houses a pulpit altar with a sound cover. An octagonal baptismal font stands in front of the simple altar table on the slightly raised floor of the choir. The parapet fields of the gallery running around the nave on three sides, the corners of which rest on wooden pillars, show painted net structures that are reminiscent of marble.
