The Church of St. Johannes in Guckheim ( Rhineland-Palatinate ) is a church building by the Frankfurt architect Hans Busch .

history

At the end of the 1950s, the growing community of Guckheim no longer had enough space in the local Mother of God chapel . A request to hold two services on Sundays and public holidays could not be granted due to a shortage of priests. Together with the architect Hans Busch from Frankfurt am Main, known for his sacred buildings, plans were made to enlarge the chapel, including a new bell tower.

Hans Busch was commissioned with the planning. Only the third draft, now no longer as an extension of the chapel but as a new church building, received the approval of the episcopal ordinariate. On the recommendation of the church, the construction of a bell tower and the planned youth home were foregone for reasons of cost.

Construction work began in the summer of 1961 on the Weltersbitz meadow. The foundation stone was laid on October 1, 1961. The shell construction was completed by spring 1962, the topping-out ceremony was held on May 17, 1962. The inauguration finally took place on June 16, 1963, but the first service had already been held at Christmas 1962.

The St. Johanneskirche, which follows the scheme of a Wegekirche, is a decidedly simple structure with a rectangular floor plan, a pent roof sloping to the west and a sacristy in the adjacent building to the north. The east-facing altar has the greatest room height due to the shape of the roof. The single-nave church space with a gallery is enclosed on the long sides by thick walls made of basalt rubble, a typical building material of the area.

The church interior is illuminated by one horizontal and several vertical ribbon windows with glass mosaics. The only horizontal ribbon of windows oriented to the south depicts the Passion of Christ with its glass mosaics . The bell tower mentioned has not been built to this day, although the foundations were carried out with the consent of the Episcopal Ordinariate during the construction phase.

The St. Johanneskirche is a listed building .
