The St. Johannes Baptist Church is a Catholic church in Leichlingen . It is the parish church of the parish of St. Johannes Baptist and St. Heinrich.

history

In Leichlingen, which has been Protestant since the Reformation , a regular Catholic parish was re- established in 1811 after provisional beginnings . On the Johannisberg the first church was a small dry stone - hall building . When this was no longer sufficient towards the end of the century, planning for the new building began at a more central location. The Cologne architect Theodor Kremer was commissioned with the design . The foundation stone was laid on May 17, 1903. The church consecration was made on August 1, 1904 by Cologne Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Müller . In the old church on Johannisberg, after profanation and various uses, services are celebrated again today.

Architecture and equipment

St. Johannes Baptist is a neo - Gothic three - aisled hall church with a transept, polygonal choir and high tower. It is made of brick and the interior is painted in muted white with colored highlights of the architectural structure.

The stained glass windows, rich in figures, have been preserved from the neo-Gothic original furnishings. Altar, ambo and tabernacle were made in the second half of the 20th century according to the requirements of the liturgical reform. The pulpit is baroque and comes from the abolished Kreuzherren monastery in Düsseldorf.
