St. Johannes Baptist (Steinbach)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Catholic parish church of St. Johannes Baptist in Steinbach , a district of Schwäbisch Hall , is probably the oldest religious building in the region. The building stands next to the Waschbach creek on a sintered cushion deposited by it shortly before its confluence with the cooker at the river bridge.

history

The church was built around the year 1100 and has had its current name since at least 1297.

Before the Reformation, the church was the mother church of St. Michael in Schwäbisch Hall. When he was consecrated in 1156, St. Michael was expressly subordinated to her.

St. Johannes Baptist is considered the "mother church of Hall , model for St. Catherine and St. Michael" and was under the patronage of the Comburg monastery , to which it was incorporated in 1287.

Building description

The church was built in Romanesque style and was first mentioned in a document in 1100. The nave has a single nave and was once flat-roofed. The side wings have barrel vaults , the apse is built directly onto the transept. A Romanesque tower with a baroque dome rises above the crossing .

The nave has a ceiling painting from 1905, for example in the crossing and the wings of the barrel vault in the transept. During the restoration in 1965, the original Romanesque windows as well as the old entrance doors and the sound arcades of the tower were exposed again, before that the church had baroque windows.
